What percentage of wind energy is converted into a wind turbine power?
Hey Henry, good question. In fact, there has been quite a bit of work done in this area. Wind turbines today are basically about 33% efficiency. There are variations, of course, has more blades, less efficiency. Multi-bladed turbines are usually built for high winds, such as an Arctic weather station, or on an oil rig. The theoretical maximum efficiency for any wind turbine is 59%, is called the "Betz" limit, the name of an engineer who worked in the field makes years. For more information, you can go to the source. The American Wind Energy Association is a nonprofit group whos sole mission is the promoting wind energy. There are some other places to find information on the subject, I'll list some other groups later. The easiest way to get right to work in mathematics is Google, "Wind Turbine Efficiency," and look for a link to a website AWEA. They have all the formulas and examples listed for you there. There are a couple of types considered the gurus of wind energy, Mick Sagrillo and Paul Gipe. There have written books and articles on each the subject and teach classes regularly as well. You can find some of his works online or in the library. We have a wind turbine at our home in the Northern Great Lakes. This is our third, the other two did not work as well as expected. To be honest, this is a good unit, but has had problems that it is. Wind turbines are not for everyone, but if anyone has any surface, good wind, and does not care to complain to the machine from time to time, may be an interesting hobby, like growing your own tomatoes instead of buying at the supermarket. Hope this helps. Good luck and be careful.
