How much extra power is needed to compensate for wind resistance on my boat?
I'm building my own boat. It's supposed to be a non - The passenger ferry to the port nonsense of Otago in New Zealand the South. I am studying the possibility of a displacement monohull with an electric motor, batteries deep cycle chargers and wind turbines. The boat will be about 20 feet long, and I'm hoping to use an old sailing ship (the mast take up to five wind turbine capacity of 0.8 kilowatts each). The trip is 12 miles, or about 8 miles each way, 3-meter can be cut, at times, and the winds of 5 to 20 mph are the standard here. how powerful the engine need? I'm happy with a speed of 8 to 10 knots, but I wish I could do that against a strong wind speed, too. What would you suggest?
I dare say at least 15 hp, 25 probably would be fair. 7.5 to maintain progress fwd mostly, but not lead out in 8 knots upwind or against a tide.
