Does anyone have access to the carbon footprint (s) of solar cell and wind power?
Specifically, the CO2 emissions involved in the construction of the towers, turbines, concrete base, installation and maintenance of wind farms, and the CO2 emissions involved in manufacturing and maintenance items associated with solar cells and panels. I have had no luck in my attempts to search the Internet and I'm really curious.
I think it's an unknown, although some generalizations made. I was working with a construction engineer last spring in a proposed wind farm that was thinking the same question. Of course, everything we do requires an expenditure of energy so we have to compare the relative efficiency of each energy source instead of looking only figures who seek to objectively quantify a single source and decide whether it is viable or not and that would include the construction. Looked at in terms of "units" only to simplify, let's say it takes 100 units of energy to either build a wind farm or oil refinery. So now in a period years, both sources of production of 1000 units of energy. So far, 900 units are still network. But say they know a way to quantify carbon footprint in terms of unit output, wind power is used unless the oil is refined, assuming the costs of maintenance equipment are about the same, then maybe the cost would be equivalent to 100 units for wind power and 300 for oil, then labor costs would be calculated, eg 100 oil and 25 by the wind and the final cost of burning one's energy, like other 100 for the oil produced and 0 for wind energy. By Of course, the "units" are completely, 100% only for speculative purposes of illustration, but in this instance, the net gain would be 775 units for the wind power and 400 for oil. The point is that no energy source will be 100% efficient, so you have to delineate the parameters and see the efficiency on each source-comparing apples to apples, so to speak.

Thames & Kosmos Wind Power 2.0 $34.80 Build wind-powered generators to energize your electric vehicles and charge your rechargeable batteries! The wind spins the turbine, which turns an electric generator, which in turn charges your rechargeable AA batteries (not included). You can then use those wind-charged batteries to power the model vehicles you build. The six models include a glider, sail car, jet car, tractor, racecar, and tric… |
