Is it technically possible to collect solar energy in orbit and send it to the earth?
Or to build a nuclear power generator orbit (safety) and do the same. Enough electricity could be generated and sent in this way substantially aid to our energy needs? The advantage to do this in orbit would be 1. 24 hours of sunlight?, 2. Send out the mess in space if a new nuclear accident?
Yes, technically possible and it has even been done on a small scale by converting raw electricity to a beam of microwaves. At the receiving end, the microwaves are converted back raw electricity. On a small scale, that is used in RFID smart labels used by stores to label pilfered. The powers of the radio beam circuit on the label so that it can transmit a response. There is no energy source in the tag itself. Tag is deactivated by causiing burning overload the circuit. The problem of large scale is one of the focus of the beam over long distances. The beam would have to be very strong to the usable transmission power, and if the beam is deflected could cause heat damage, especially for living, cooking, more like a microwave oven does not.
