Advice on creating a solar system for an NGO in Kenya?
I run a charity based in Canada. We provide our NGO partners in Kenya with a laptop, printer and the solar system (and outside any network) that will allow them to reduce their costs. The solar panel and battery should be sufficient to charge six phones a day using the laptop at least one hour (and up two hours) of daily use, most casual of the printer. 1. I've heard laptops made specifically for use in the developing world with the energy solar, and thus are more energy efficient and are not as expensive. Is this so and where might I ask about this? 2. Apart from that, what are some things to consider when choosing which laptop / printer to buy when it is based on solar energy and a limited budget? 3. What solar panel, battery and inverter combination recommended for these conditions? Is there any way of saving on the inverter / driver? Thanks, Santiago Perez
You can search machines that run directly on DC power the solar system and the battery (maybe 12 or 24 V DC). Even if you find something that works in tension Nominal * *, you may wish to review the specifications carefully to see who will accept the voltage range (perhaps 10-14V) from the battery. It can be a slightly more efficient (no energy loss as heat in transformers and investors) and reliable (no transformers or investors to fail and stop the whole system).
