The light strikes the surface of the photovoltaic cell causes electrons to be kicked off. These electrons are encouraged to move due to intentionally placed particular impurities in the silicon lattice. The movement of electrons is the current flow. The disadvantages of photovoltaics are (among others) 1) the high initial costs 2) low efficiency 3) can only work when they have adequate sunlight 4) to produce low voltage, requiring large banks (expensive) batteries to store enough energy to be useful 5) which are fragile
