What is meant by "expand" the sunlight?
This article about a burst of solar energy is much talk of "magnifying glass" sunlight. What do you mean? Start-up: Affordable solar energy as possible in a year ", USA Today, 4/28/08: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/energy/environment/2008-04-28-solar-power-sunrgi_N.htm? csp = 1 This company, says, "is based on lenses to magnify sunlight 2,000 times, letting it produce as much electricity as standard panels with a much smaller "and" Other makers of photovoltaic concentration magnify sunlight about 500 times. "Is a new solar-power-specific sense magnify the word? None of the senses in my dictionary form, and it worries me how people could read this unthoughtful. I'm half curious what concentrates the energy photovoltaics and how lenses are useful and 80% I'm curious if this wrong terminology used in the solar community or a confused writer. Looking for an explanation series of one or both.
A better word would be "concentrated". "Enlarge" would suggest getting something for nothing. I agree that Article not adequately explain the physical product. However, it is true that the photovoltaic efficiency can be increased by applying more intense light (see ref. 1). If can be achieved by 37% which is pretty impressive. For me (who has been around the block a few times) it's ironic that we are going back to the first transistor material Germanium, with all its problems of temperature. Indeed, the cost per kilowatt-hour is a very flexible. It is based on the size, efficiency, geographic region (insolation, cloud cover), and the cost vs. expected lifetime. See ref. 2. It is much easier to predict 7 cents / kWh to reach it. I suggest you send the response to first consider the alternatives. Wind energy is expensive because wind is not well concentrated (to consider what is a low-energy fan the window can be turned off) and winds can be unreliable, like sunlight. The potential for producing large areas of PV at a reasonable cost is much greater than for large areas of the turbines. Billions have been spent on bio-ethanol (taking the food sources of production and cost of excessive amounts of Petro-energy) hydrogen scam (it's free! It's in our drinking water!) and CO2 plans to hide in strange ways and places. We are in dire straits and can not afford not to work on solar energy. Furthermore, the concentration of sunlight is not "necessary" to generate electricity, is simply more efficient.
