Combining geothermal, wind and solar energy in a home?
My husband is hoping to build a house next year and I really want to make the home network as completely independent as possible without breaking the bank. Our area has moderate potential for geothermal energy (though not as good as some other areas) and the property you are probably looking at buying has a potential for moderate wind (wind probably averaging around 10 mph). It also has a south-facing slope where it is likely that construction could use solar roof panels, although the average area 230 inches of snow per year, which could be a problem (the summers are very sunny with little rain, but the winters are very cloudy). Would it be feasible to combine geothermal, wind, and / or solar energy using smaller systems for a day of wind and clouds, but would yield power as would be a sunny day without wind? Or would be better if it only focuses on a type of power and Gung ho to go to a power source?
Geothermal can give the most consistent source of power – given the conditions you described. You could use solar energy as a backup ….. About what passive solar heating and cooling? There is a good book called "The passive solar house" if you want to look at more. In addition, this site in planning home of your dreams may be useful … http://www.building-your-green-home.com/dream-green-home.html also considering building a house ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms), which only drastically reduce their energy consumption. Check out this page in ICF homes … http://www.building-your-green-home.com/insulated-concrete-forms.html You also might want to check the page in the site's home energy efficient design. It plans to have fun at home to sleep! I think his ideas are great! Hope this helps.
